The Yeahs Yeah Yeahs first emerged from the oh so trendy New York scene in 2001. They first caught people’s attention with the filthy single ‘Bang’ a 2 minute dismissal of one of Karen O’s former lovers. Punchy, unique, cool and exciting it was the perfect introduction to the band. Initially the band was somewhat of an oddity given that they didn’t have a bassist and boasted a female vocalist. Karen O in particular caught the public and the critics’ imaginations. She often took to the stage in self customised multi coloured fluorescent outfits that had girls rushing for the nearest pair of scissors and sewing machine. In 2002 the band made a brief foray into the charts with ‘Machine’ making number 37, however maximum impact was made with ‘Date With The Night’ a gloriously trashy punk track which still ignites dance floors to this date.
The bands debut album ‘A Fever To Tell’ contained numerous tracks in the same vein as ‘Date With The Night’ and was an instant hit with both the critics and the fans. The band went on to release ‘Pin’ and ‘Y Control’, both singles again showcasing the bands fast paced, nonsensical raucous sound. However if people were beginning to think The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were a one trick pony then they were proved wrong when they released ‘Maps’ an achingly beautiful open hearted track which showed there is more to Karen O than bizarre outfits and dancing like a loon. In early 2006 rumours began to surface abut the follow up to ‘A Fever To Tell’ with whispers regarding a concept album about Karen O’s cat. Luckily these were unfounded and the band came back with a more mature and well rounded album in ‘Show Your Bones’.
Produced by Sam ‘Squeak E. Clean’ Spiegel Karen O has described the album as “What happens when you put your finger in a light socket”. The first single to be lifted from ‘Show Your Bones’ was Gold Lion, one of many slower but emphatic tracks on the album. With a captivating front woman, a genius on guitar, a superb live act and a maturing sound on record the future looks bright for The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
