"I don't really enjoy listening to my own music," admits Rae Morris, sitting in the middle of the woods at the beautiful Latitude Festival, by the piano on which she has just performed 'Don't Go' for Gigwise in front of a gathering crowd.

She's in the minority. The private performance is unannounced, and atop a hill well away from the festival thoroughfare - and yet by the end, she's attracted a sizeable, and completely rapt, audience. No one who ambles past reaches the destination they were headed to.

"It's not something to do to sit down and chill out on a Friday night or anything," she continues, "because that would be a bit narcissistic and weird...That's why on the Bombay record it is kind of frustrating, because I really want to listen to the whole thing, but I feel weird when my voice comes on."
She is referring, of course, to Bombay Bicycle Club, on whose album she provided guest vocals a year before releasing her own debut, Unguarded. "I'm quite an embarrassment actually," she laughs, "I'm like an embarrassing fan girl when it comes to Bombay Bicycle Club."
Another overwhelming fan encounter for Morris (though one suspects, before long, she'll find herself increasingly on the receiving end of these) was meeting Coldplay's Chris Martin. "[It] was just the most amazing experience, because I needed his... It was the perfect timing, it was the time in making the album that I needed to rethink things and consolidate what it was that I was trying to do."
