More about:

Most artists' first attempt at writing a song is an embarrassing fumble of amateurism - a thrash of chords, trite ideas and adolescent sentiment, aping countless bands before them. But for Garbage's Shirley Manson, it would be the making of them - setting the template of Garbage with a lush and unique sound, and a direct, real and raw emotional connection.

"'Milk was the first song I ever wrote," Manson tells Gigwise of the now classic single from their debut album. "I have feelings of great love for this song and I still playing it live. It's my most romantic song that I've ever written and I love it dearly. It's beautiful."

She continues: "And, actually, now that I come to think of it, my husband that I'm now married to, before he met me that was the time he heard me - on the radio, listening to 'Milk'. That's where he fell madly in love with me, so he says."
