Few bands have got us quite as excited as Sløtface, FKA Slutface, in 2016. With endless energy, killer hooks, anarchic live shows and a considered, articulate approach at kicking back against cliches of modern youth, they truly are the new punk heroes that the world deserves.
As this year marks the 40th anniversary of punk breaking, we thought we'd ask the young upstarts about the punk icons that inspire them - honouring everyone from The Clash to Green Day, LCD Soundsystem to Hinds. Add 'good taste' to the long list of things they've got going for them...
Honningbarna - 'Prinser Av Sarajevo'
"Honningbarna was kind of a Justin Bieber for us (in a good way) when we were younger. We discovered them when they won the Norwegian equivalent of BBC introducing in 2011. They were only 17 at that time and were, and still are mental on stage. No doubt Norway’s best live act. Our favourite concert memories are of seeing Honningbarna in a sick mosh pit with tons of sweaty teenagers."
The Clash - 'White Riot'
"The first punk band Haley fell in love with. Used to listen to them on my MP3 player in a tree at my elementary school, cause I was bad ass like that."
Avril Lavigne - 'Sk8rboi'
"Ahh Avril. So much angst. Such a good example of how you can commercialise punk cliches and totally pull it off. Avril is our spirit animal."
Green Day - 'Basket Case'
"The first record we all, individually, fell in love with. We still draw a lot of inspiration from Green Day because it’s a reference from our teen years that we all have. We all loved and listened to a LOT of Green Day, and still do."
Lizzy Mercier Desloux - 'Fire'
"Lizzy was a part of the 'no wave' scene in the late 70s, which actually was a reaction against punk rock’s recycling of traditionalist rock tropes. She was badass to the bone: She helped establish the store Harry Cover, temple of the punk movement in France and was a big part of dance-punk/no wave scene. Which leads us over to the next artist..."
LCD Soundsystem - 'Drunk Girls'
"Tor-Arne’s favourite band of all time. We love how LCD soundsystem are one of the most punk bands ever in the way that they make and perform music, without being a classic four chord bass, guitar, drums punk band."
Deathcrush - 'Lesson No.16'
"Another favourite Norwegian live act. Such amazing badasses. Anyone that gets the chance to see them live should."
FIDLAR - 'West Coast'
"Fuck it dog/dad, life’s a risk! Always a recurring reference for us when it comes to songwriting, recording and playing live. We are also from the West Coast, we love to surf, and we wish to play kickass shows and make great records, just like FIDLAR."
HINDS - 'Bamboo'
"We finally got a chance to see HINDS last year in Oslo. They were late because of a delayed plane, but they did not give any shits and delivered a great, funny and liberating set. These are the future punk legends of our generation, at least in spirit!"
Slotface release the 'Sponge Stage' EP on 27 May.
