Since she burst onto the music scene back in 1982, Madonna has shocked, enthralled, for some appalled, but most importantly, entertained us all.
Madonna gave us some of the best hits and introduced us to the conical bra and the concept of 'vogueing', for which we will be ever-grateful. Then again she also gave us 'Body of Evidence'...
The best-selling female artist of all time has had her fair share of stratospheric highs and a few worrying lows. So, in honour of Her Madge's 55th birthday, we thought we'd put together a list of our favourite best and worst moments of Madonna's career to date...
The Best
1. Madonna has given us some of the best singles in pop music history. Need we mention 'Holiday', 'Borderline', 'Like Virgin' 'Like A Prayer'... Oh, OK the entire Immaculate Collection.
2. THAT infamous three-way kiss with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 VMAs
3. She has successfully forced the media to deal with, and eventually embrace, female sexuality. "If we're gonna have censorship, let's not be hypocrites about it," she said about her 'Justify My Love' video. "Why is it ok for 10 year-olds to see someone's body ripped to shreds and why do parents have a problem with 2 consenting adults displaying affection with each other regardless of their sex?"
4. To stay at the top of her game, Madonna has remained unquestionably determined to re-invent herself and stay relevant.
5. The incredible, but sort of wonderful, hydrangeas incident.
And the Worst...
1. She's definitely not always sweetness and light...
2. She criticised Lady Gaga, who has always spoken of Madonna highly and names her as a huge influence. Which really wasn't very nice (but mildly amusing)
3. She does try, bless her, but her movie career was a bit of a car crash, to be honest. Exhibit A:
4. There really was no excuse for 'Girl Gone Wild'. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should
5. She can pull off a lot of looks, but overgrown boy scout is NOT one of them...
But good or bad, she's still a legend. Happy 55th Madonna!
