Interpol: 'We needed to prove ourselves again'

Sam Fogarino on the drama of their past and hopes for the future

"It happens with families when they lose a family member," admits Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino, musing over the state of Interpol without bassist Carlos D. "The awful death of whoever will make the unit realise that they were being very trivial and shallow over something. Now that person's gone, they have to remember what's really important and not get caught up in superficiality of making music. Carlos got caught up in that a lot."

But that's where we find the highly-evolved Interpol of 2015. Enjoying a renaissance with their most direct and acclaimed album in a decade, El Pintor, we caught up with the band during their residency at The Roundhouse to talk about dramas past and the promise of the future.

"We're all proud of what we did on this past record," nods Sam. "I'm not being coy, just honest - it made us happy that we could make this record. We didn't really go far off on some kind of self-indulgent experiment. It's back to the essence of what made people like the band in the first place."

"With this band, everything has got to fall in to place - the task at hand is  what's most important."

Check out our interview above, with Fogarino talking about proving themselves, becoming more open as a band, how the world had thought they'd split up, overcoming the 'drama' of Our Love To Admire and what the future may hold.
