Ice Cube has said that NWA’s attitude towards music helped pushed the boundaries for other influential figures in pop-culture, such as "Eminem and South Park."
Speaking with NME as part of a Twitter Q&A yesterday with his son Oshea Jackson Junior, (who plays Ice Cube in Straight Outta Compton) Ice Cube had plenty to say about N.W.A’s influence.
When asked if he could envision a hip hop artist having the same kind of political impact as N.W.A did when they arrived onto the music scene, Ice Cube said he was sure they could.
"People say the right things, strike the right chord, touch the right nerve. I mean I’m not going to say NWA was ultra political, we were just ultra honest. So it’s really about another group hitting the right topic at the right time and connecting with the people. They can make a big impact."
He also had some interesting things to say when asked to speak on the legacy of the group and its influence on other musicians.
"We made it OK for artists to be themselves. We let the world know that you could be just as famous doing it hard and rough and taboo and dirty and all the other things that they call our music. We opened a door for artists like Eminem and shows like South Park. It gave young people a 360 range of expression."
While the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton is garenering wide critical accliam and box office success, it has also re-surfaced some disturbing acts of violence against women, Dr. Dre's brutal attack on journalist Dee Barnes being removed from the film's the original screenplay.
