Why the world is debating whether or not LCD Soundsystem are reuniting

This would be the greatest thing ever, but it's hard to believe

Last night, the music world was sent into a frenzy at the awesome news that LCD Soundsystem were reportedly getting back together to tour next year. Then confusion ensued. Here's why.

LCD Soundsystem, one of the greatest bands of this century, amicably split in 2011 after three flawless albums - culminating in an amazing final show at New York's Madison Square Garden, which would later be immortalised on the brilliant Shut Up And Play The Hits epic concert movie and The Long Goodbye live album.

Since then, the band have been busying themselves with various projects - with Murphy working on soundtracks, turning tennis data into music, producing the likes of Arcade Fire and Klaxons, remixing David Bowie, making a short film, planning to turn the entire NYC subway into a musical symphony, launching his own brand of coffee and working with 2ManyDJs on the incredible Despacio

Oh yeah, he's also opened a restaurant with his wife. As you would imagine, it sounds like he's had his hands pretty full and found fulfilment in 'retirement'. Well...

Last night, we all went a little bit insane when Consequence Of Sound reported that 'multiple sources' had confirmed that LCD Soundsystem would be getting back together in 2016, writing "as we hear it, the band will headline at least three high-profile music festivals in the US and UK, with an official announcement expected soon."

Billboard then 'confirmed' the news, adding that a 'well placed source' said they were 'definitely reuniting'.

Incredible, right? Our hearts lit up along with Twitter as we imagined seeing LCD just one more time at Glasto or Coachella. But then, Murphy's label partner and manager at DFA crushed any hope with a string of dream-destroying Tweets:

Despite all this, CoS still claim: "our sources stress the band intends to reunite next year, and we stand behind our original report."

We're not sure how much more of this we can handle. We're going to lie down for a while.
