Amy Winehouse up for a BRIT despite dying nearly five years ago

The late singer is up for the British Female Solo Artist award

The 2016 BRIT Award nominations were announced last night (14 January), and there's one name amongst the nominees that's proving slightly puzzling.

Alongside Adele, Florence + The Machine, Jess Glynne and Laura Marling in the British Female Solo Artist category is... Amy Winehouse. Despite the fact that she died four and a half years ago.

It's not unprecedented, of course, for artists to be posthumously honoured at big awards ceremonies. Queen's Freddie Mercury won a BRIT after he died in 1991, and David Bowie is to receive a posthumous tribute at this year's ceremony - it's just, there have been four other BRIT Awards since Winehouse died.

We assume Winehouse's inclusion in the year's nominees is due to Asif Kapadia's recent documentary, Amy - which was nominated for an Oscar yesterday - but it still doesn't seem to make a huge amount of sense.

The BRIT Awards will be hosted once again by Ant & Dec on 24 February. See the full list of nominees below.
