Prince was due to meet with a doctor the day after his death in order to help him beat a painkiller addiction, it has been reported.
The singer was found dead in an elevator in his Paisley Park home last month, aged just 57. There have since been reports that he had a longstanding addiction to the painkiller Percocet, dating back to hip surgery he underwent in 2009.
Officials subsequently confirmed that he was found with opioid medication on his person at the time of his death. According to an attorney for California doctor Howard Kornfeld, as reported by the Star Tribune, Prince was set to meet with Kornfeld the day after his death, because he was “dealing with a grave medical emergency.”
Because Kornfeld couldn’t clear his schedule to meet with the singer the next day, he sent his son, Andrew Kornfeld, and promised to follow on 22 April. When Andrew turned up, however, Prince’s representatives couldn’t find him. He was reportedly one of three people there when Prince’s body was discovered in an elevator a few minutes later - and it was he who called 911.
His lawyer and former manager L. Londell McMillan said: "People use medication. The question is, are you on meds in a dangerous way?"
"Everybody who knows Prince knows he wasn't walking around drugged up. That's foolish. No one ever saw Prince and said 'He looks high.' It wasn't what he was about."
Autopsy results, which will include toxicology reports, are yet to be released.
