It may be regarded as a classic in the eyes of scores of indie fans, but Brandon Flowers has revealed that he can't listen to The Killers' debut album Hot Fuss any more - adding that he prefers The Strokes Is This It.
Containing the huge singles 'Mr Brightside', 'Somebody Told Me', 'Smile Like You Mean It' and 'All These Things That I've Done', the record garnered generally positive reviews and topped the charts around the world.
However, Flowers is not a fan. Speaking to Q Magazine, he said he couldn't stand to listen to it anymore and would quickly change stations should a track come on the radio.
"It's not uncommon for people to hear things about their voice they don't like, or the recordings," said Flowers. "Everybody wishes they could go back and re-do things. But I acknowledge there was some magic captured."
Speaking as its standing as a 'classic debut', Flowers said: "If you ask me, The Strokes' debut is better. Guns N' Roses' debut is better," he said, before adding, "but I do think we're up there and I'm proud of it."
Speaking to Gigwise about The Killers' follow-up with Sam's Town, he said: "There's sort of a reverence for our second record," Flowers tells Gigwise. "I think our fans like all of our records, but there's a different kind of love for the second record. Maybe that's what they're looking for - something more like that?"
He continued: "But I think there's a certain quality that they definitely expect, and we have that pressure that we put ourselves too. It really connected with people in a way that the other ones didn't."
On the subject of the rise among their contemporaries at the turn of the century, Flowers continues: "From the early 2000s I feel like, there were quite a few bands that seemed to know where they were and what they were doing. I just don't see that as much now I guess - but if you look at Interpol, The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Kings Of Leon, The White Stripes; those were really strong identities with individual people in those bands. They were separate from others bands, it was an exciting time."
Meanwhile, The Killers are hard at work on their next album with Elton John - despite bassist Mark Stoermer revealing that he'll no longer be touring with the band.
