The Sunshine Underground

• Craig Wellington (vocals/guitar)
• Stuart Jones (guitar)
• Daley Smith (bass)
• Matthew Gwilt (drums)

The Sunshine Underground formed in Leeds, a city currently undergoing a musical renaissance, with the sole intention of getting people to party.

Like a fever you actually want to catch, the Sunshines following has spread as the band have sold out London and Leeds on their first headline tour. This follows successful support slots for LCD Soundsystem and countless sweaty local rave-ups. They also earned the ‘Live Band of the Year’ trophy at the Leeds Music Awards.

Their debut (promo only) single won Zane Lowe's Fresh Meat competition and since then the boys have toured up and down, leaving a trail of danced-out fans basking in their anthemic afterglow.

Huge choruses, boisterous bass lines and repetitive beats: it's a heady concoction that has turned Sunshine Underground gigs into chaotic scenes of communal celebration; the band whipping the mad mishmash of folk who form their hardcore following into a frenzy. More uptight musicians have manifestos, unshine Underground just want to make people walk 10-feet tall, electrify them with sound. They talk, unashamedly, of being an uplifting band, sometimes literally. "I've got a picture of someone from the audience at Nastyfest," swears Craig, "walking on the ceiling." They are not interested in playing ordinary venues at ordinary times, preferring late-night shows at impromptu basement raves. "Everyone's welcome as long as you're up for it," encourages Stuart. "Get involved, get sweaty. Those are the rules."

Their first release, Commercial Breakdown, earned even more kudos from the critics, and the momentum shows no signs of slowing. In addition to their hectic live schedule, the boys have now released their debut album "Raise The Alarm" produced by stellar tag team Steve Dub (Chemical Brothers) and Segs (The Ruts), Robert Harder and Dan Kahuna. The album features live favourites Borders, Panic Attack and My Army as well as the singles ‘Commercial Breakdown’ and ‘Put You In Your Place’.

Bringing a danceable sensibility to the regionally-accented angular guitar antics so popular at the moment, The Sunshine Underground look set to go over ground at any moment.
