More The Delta Fiasco
There is something happening in Liverpool, there is a definite sense of change in the air. No longer does the acoustic guitar and sea shanty rule, a more current and electronic sound is prevailing, its exciting, refreshing and more than welcome. The Delta Fiasco, Nathan Walczak and Nick Bentley, are purveyors of this Scouse Sonic Sound. They take anthemic rock tracks and feed them through a blender until they are bleeding pure excitement. Where most bands take their music in a straight line The Delta Fiasco shoot off in insane directions, from pure white noise to a trance beat, from holding you in their arms to slapping you in the face. They are the new sound of Liverpool and they are taking the likes of Shack, The La' and The Coral and smacking them round the head with a laptop. In short they are brilliant.
In the Second World War a renegade group of Nazi soldiers who, angry at being forced to fight, took the vigilante approach and began killing their officers and soldiers. They called themselves The Deltas. Nick continues the story, "Basically I read about this group realized that things are not that different today, We realised the irony in that, the way you get hassle just for looking a bit different, eventually the music we were making suited the name Delta and that itself evolved into The Delta Fiasco.
Describing the music The Delta Fiasco make is difficult as there are no obvious influences, it is like nothing you have heard before yet hugely accessible. Nick and Nathan's alternative musical ideas were why the band were formed in the first place. “We were in bands before and wanted to put the laptop into use and make different sounds and the rest of the band were just not into it, so we went out on our own and had no restrictions that way". So how exactly do The Delta Fiasco write their songs? Nick says, “A lot of people notice the laptop in our songs but that's probably the last thing we put on our songs, we don't have a drummer so we use the laptop but we are not doing karaoke over the top, we write all the songs on guitar then put the drum machine on and sample some strings. They are still our songs."
Lyrically the songs are often about dark subject matter, we asked Nathan to describe one of the bands best loved songs 'Professor Plum'. "Basically its about paranoia, I imagine murder to be the worst thing you can do and we like to put a concept on a song. Rather than say this is what its about we mask it a bit and so paranoia and murder we came up with a loose Cluedo based concept". If this sound pretentious trust us it isn't, the track is a haunting riff laden monster, encircling the lines - "Oh my God they're breaking in, I'm waiting in the bedroom with the candlestick"
Live, the band have crafted their stage act through supporting big name new bands like White Rose Movement, The Long Blondes and The Mystery Jets. When asked about their favourite recent gig the pair both agreed on their show with The Maccabees from Brighton, "There was a group of about thirty people who knew all the words, that gives us something to build on and shows we have a growing fan base."So do the band have a track they particularly love playing live? "Personally" says Nathan, "I like Death Letters or Stumbling Block because they have that dance element. Playing live is what we really love and now we have a collection of songs that people know there is a really great buzz at gigs, people are dancing and that's what we really want."
