The ipod in its technical terms is a hard drive based music player from Apple computers. In lay terms it’s a cool little white box with a touch screen that lets you store all your music downloads from a pc. It can play many different music formats including MP’s, WAV, AAC and Apple Lossless Encoding, which is a type of encoding of digital music. It was first launched in October of 2001 and could only be used with Macintosh computers, but was soon adapted to be compatible with Windows mid 2002. The most exciting programme available on the ipod is iTunes. This is a music programme from Apple computers designed to allow the user to play, organise and buy music files. Manipulation of music is possible through the use of this programme as well as
• Organisation of music into play lists
• Ability to edit file information
• Recording of cd’s
• Capability to upload files to a digital music player
• Ability to purchase music on the internet
Users are also able to add all sorts of fancy gadgets to their ipod such as amplifiers, speakers, mounts and stands and headphones.
A new 20 GB ipod retails at £259.99.
