The Detroit Cobras cover original songs from Motown, soul and 50’s rock and roll. Though they are a revival band recreating the work of others, the group from Detroit, add a unique blend of creativity and style to each record, providing a true reflection of past and present.
Formed in Detroit in 1994, the Cobras are a garage/rock band. Founder member guitarist Steve Shaw started the group after meeting the legendary Alex Chilton of Big Star. The time spent with Alex was an inspirational period for Shaw, listening to rnb; gospel and 50’s rock and roll music. The period spent with Chilton provided the foundations for the groups’ musical direction. Steve recruited the remaining band members, all of whom are Detroit natives, including an ex butcher and a lap dancer.
In 1998 they were signed to ‘Sympathy for the Record Industry’ and released ‘Mink Rat or Rabbit’. Their 2001 release ‘Life Love & Leaving’ was extremely popular with audiences on this side of the Atlantic and their notoriety eventually lead to a recording deal with London based Rough Trade Records.
