Motley Crue

They may have been rivalled by Guns N Roses for their thrash metal, but no band could ever imitate Mötley Crüe’s phenomenal bouffant hair do’s and dodgy make up.

Looking like promoters for a hairspray manufacturers, Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee Bass put their wigs together to form the band in 1981. They hired guitarist Bob ‘Mick Mars’ Deal and vocalist ‘Vince Neil’ Wharton. Afetr a wrestle with a few band names, they setlled on Mötley Crüe and prepared to ROCK the following two decades.

Their first album, ‘Too fast for Love’ was released with tiny Lethur records. Surprisingly, they sold 20 000 copies and moved to Elektra records.

Their second album, ‘Shout at the Devil (1983) went platinum, but their celebrations were ground to a halt when Wharton crashed his car, killing his passenger, Nicholas Dingley from band ‘Hanoi rocks’. Incredibly, he was sentenced to just 30 days imprisonment and a stint of community service. Luckily for the band, ‘Theatre of Pain’ was shredding through the charts at this point, and after a short recovery period from the press, Mötley Crüe became responsible for the first power ballad (eek!) to be shown on MTV.

The guys created their own record label, Mötley Records and signed a new deal with Elektra for a cool $25 million. Times were hard though, as music consumers grew tired of their flowing locks. Cue arguments, band member swapping and wife beating. New drummer Randy Castillo died in 2002 and the band have decided to take an indefinite period of rest.
