The Enemy - 'You're Not Alone'

starstarstarhalf starno star

Anthemic in substance and driven with working class angst ‘You’re Not Alone’ delivers a fine example of the passion and sound of this Coventry trio. The latest track to be lifted from the bands number one selling album, ‘We’ll Live and Die in These Towns,’ sees The Enemy's frontman Tom Clarke once again raging his enthusiasm for the dreams of a striving underdog as he sings: “There’s just too many dreams in this wasteland/For you to leave us all behind.”

Unfortunately we have heard this same building up to a chanting chorus in previous efforts ‘Had Enough’ and ‘Away From Here.’ Although it is an improvement on the weak lyrics of the previous singles it still fails to offer anything we haven’t previously heard. If you’re already a fan this will be a firm favourite and if you’re going to be converted then this is possibly the song to do it.

Released 17/09/2007 on EMI Records.

  • Easily their best song yet. Should be a bit high than 3 and a half stars...

  • Utter pish, sounds worse live. But then if the Jam covering U2 is what you’re into then go nuts!

  • this song is fantastic. it actually says something rather than just blathering on about failed relationships or drinking away the weekend. ok so musically it might not be amazing, but lyrically it’s great and it has something that loads of chart acts at the moment don’t: originality and a point to it.

  • I like this song. Not many bands these day’s speak about something that affects real people. Maybe you don’t like the music, maybe you think they sound like someone else, but at least they’re making the effort to address something with this song (the closure of the Peugeot plant in Coventry and the mass job losses that went with it)...isn’t that what music’s about?? It’s nice to listen to something that actually makes sense and is not a pop filled fantasy o

  • Make no mistake this is a truley great song. I shared an afternoon with some Midlands car workers last year in my mother in laws kitchen (!) and they were talking about their passion and their pride of their failing industry...so as soon as I heard this song, that conversation came flooding back and this song overwhelmed me with its feeling and passion and accute insight. Good one, lads, my song of the year 2007.
