An investigation has been launched into the safety of Apple’s iPod Nano after one reportedly gave off sparks while being charged.
The incident took place in Kanagawa, a district of southwest Tokyo, in January but wasn’t reported to the country’s Trade and Economy Industry until this month.
An official at the Industry said they suspect that there may have been a defect with the Nano’s lithium-ion battery.
The iPod in question is an earlier edition of the Nano and has the Japanese model number: MA099J/A.
It’s understood that Apple shipped 425,000 iPod’s with the same model number, although it’s not clear how many have been purchased.
Apple have been asked to investigate the matter and report their findings to the Japanese government.
It’s not the first time that the safety of Lithium-ion batteries has been brought into question.
The battery, which boasts a longer life, has been blamed on a series of laptop fires over recent years, reports AP.
