Anthony Kiedis: 'Red Hot Chili Peppers Are Disbanded'

But hints at new songs...

Red Hot Chili Peppers are currently “disbanded”, according to frontman Anthony Kiedis.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, the singer said that the band had decided to take a minimum of one year off after touring their last record, ‘Stadium Arcadium’.

Kiedis explained that recording for ‘Stadium Arcadium’ had taken its toll on the band.

“We actually took a very long time to make the ‘Stadium Arcadium’ record, because we wrote a lot of songs and then got way too married to them and decided we need it to be a double album,” he said. “Which was a great experience, but it took forever.”

Because of similar recording processes on their previous two albums - ‘Californication’ and ‘By the Way’ - Kiedis said that the band felt like they hadn't enjoyed time off since 1999.

“We were all emotionally and mentally zapped at the end of that run. Cooler heads prevailed and the discussion at the end of our last tour was, ‘Let's not do anything Red Hot Chili Peppers-related for a minimum of one year, and just live and breathe and eat and learn new things’,” he said.

Kiedis did add, however, that he was “starting to get just a little bit of a tingle that it would be nice to start thinking about songs and pieces of music. But just pieces.”

  • you can’t just say yes they should stay disbanded because i don’t like them or no they should get back together because i want to here new stuff! i think they should have a break. they’ve obviously been working their asses off. i like the band but everyone needs a bloody break once in a while! its not like they can take a week vacation and not be ”anthony kiedis” front man from rhcp! they’ll still get noticed. i think a year break is perfectly respectable.

  • I completely agree with that. Anthony Kiedis works extremely hard as does the rest of the band and the guy needs a break. I know deep down he wants to continue writing music but he’s just a little tired. The guy is 45 years old for Christ’s sake! He needs a break more than anybody. They’ll be back.

  • Agreed. They’re a fantastic band, I love them to death, but time off is good. That only means they’ll come back fresher with all their awesome awesomeness. ;)

  • I think the time off will give them what they need. Kiedis has a kid and the rest of them seem to be keeping very busy so I think that when they do come back they will be amazing. Wish it was sooner, but I would much rather wait for something truly amazing, which it will be.

  • Hey, give the pepper’s a break! Theyve been at it for over 20 years! No matter how much we want a new album, we have to give them time to chill, becuase yes they are human, just like us, and they need a little free time, right? I’’m not saying that I won’’t miss them, becuase personally I can’’t wait for some new songs, but I understand and I hope that they can relax and come back ready for more!
