Los Angeles police want to talk to a doctor who lived with Michael Jackson amid growing reports that painkilling medication may have played a role in the singer’s death.

An LAPD spokesperson told The Guardian that the doctor, whose name is not known, was wanted as part of their routine investigation.

Jackson's physician has apparently gone missing, and his car, left outside the singer's LA home yesterday, has been impounded, police said.

The news comes as fresh fears are raised over Jackson’s use of painkilling drugs.

According to The Sun newspaper, the King of Pop was taking Demerol – a drug similar to morphine – to abet old performing injuries as he prepared for his comeback gigs.

A Jackson family lawyer said he understood the star’s drug use had been “extensive” in recent months.

Jackson, who died yesterday afternoon of a suspected heart attack, had been due to play 50 shows in London, starting on July 13.

The star collapsed into a coma at his home in Holmby Hills around midday. He died two hours later at the UCLA Medical Centre.

Tributes have been paid from his musical collaborators and fans around the world.

Both Madonna and Sir Paul McCartney expressed their sadness over Jackson’s death, but also voiced support and concern for his children.

Drugs fears

As in Jackson’s life, there is already mounting mystery and conspiracy surrounding his death.

Brian Oxman, thought to be the Jackson family’s lawyer, told spoke to CNN about Jackson's alleged dependency on painkillers.

“This is not something that has been unexpected... because of the medications which Michael was under," he said.

“I do not know the extent of the medications that he was taking but the reports we had been receiving in the family is that they were extensive.

“When you warn people that this is what’s going to happen and then it happens... where there’s smoke, there’s fire.”

An autopsy is taking place now on the singer’s body at the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office.
