At London press conference...

Simon Cowell has criticised a campaign to make Rage Against The Machine's 'Killing In the Name' Christmas number one.

The internet campaign, hatched on Facebook, is aiming to prevent this year's X Factor winner from once again claiming the festive top spot.

Speaking a press conference in London, Cowell said he believed the plot was aimed at him - and not this year's three finalists.

“Me having a No 1 record at Christmas is not going to change my life particularly,” he said.

"It does however change these guys' lives and we put this opportunity there so that the winner of the X Factor gets the chance of having a big hit record.”

He added: "I think it's quite a cynical campaign geared at me which is actually going to spoil the party for these three.

"I also think it's incredibly dismissive of the people who watch and enjoy the show... to treat our audiences as if they're stupid and I don't like that."

Past winners from the reality programme have topped the Christmas countdown for the last four years.

A Facebook group is calling on people to “mass-purchase” 'Killing In The Name' “as a protest to The X Factor bollocks”.

This year's X Factor champion is due to release a cover of 'The Climb' by Miley Cyrus as their festive single.

UPDATE: Odds slashed to 3-1 on Rage Against The Machine scoring Christmas number one.

  • Sounds to me like Mr Cowell assumes his X-factor winner has the divine right to number one, it's not ruining anyone's party, just a bit of healthy competition! Surely that makes it all the more fun!

  • Its not a campaign about Simon, its about the music and people choosing what they want to buy. Calling half a million people stupid and cynical is stupid and cynical

  • “Me having a No 1 record at Christmas is not going to change my life particularly,” he said. So why do you always release the winner's single in Christmas week? You bloody hypocrite... RATM for #1
