The BBC are reportedly closing down 6 Music and the Asian Network as part of its cost-cutting measures.
According to The Times, the BBC is also dramatically scaling back parts of its website in a bid to make millions of pounds in savings.
Despite the newspaper's detailed report on an apparent leaked document, a spokesperson for the corporation has refused to comment on the “speculation.”
It's believed that the essence of the BBC's “wide-ranging strategic review” is that they want to focus on quality of content over quantity.
The newspaper alleges that the BBC Switch and Blast! websites will be closed as part of the online cutbacks drawn up by the coporation's director of policy and strategy John Tate.
Any alleged cuts will be formally announced by director general Mark Thompson early next month.
The planned closure of 6 music in particular has provoked a huge outcry from the public. Almost 60,000 people have joined the Facebook group 'Save 6 Music', while the station is currently a trending topic on Twitter.
What are your thoughts on the (alleged) closure of BBC 6 Music? Have your say in the comments section below.
- If the BBC stopped of wasting money on overpaid, over rated presenters perhaps important services like these could remain. The priorites are all wrong at the bbc.
- **** the BBC for doing this.
- This is not an important service. There's plenty of internet radio stations servicing this sort of niche market. It's about time the BBC finally saw sense.
- If 6music goes, there is no bbc station i will listen too. Radio 1 is just too sad for words!
- The only people who will suffer are the people who used to need. now they will need again. It will be remembered.
