Nelly Furtado has promised to give the money she received to perform a private concert for the family of Colonel Gaddafi to charity.

The singer was paid $1million to play a short set in Italy in 2007.

Her decision comes amid growing violence in Libya and calls for the long-standing leader to stand down.

"In 2007, I received 1million$ from the Qaddafi clan to perform a 45 min. Show for guests at a hotel in Italy," Furtado wrote on Twitter. "I am going to donate the $."

The singer has yet to reveal what charity she will donate the money to.

On Monday, it was reported that Beyonce, Usher and Mariah Carey had all received money for private gigs they performed for the Gaddafi family.
