Neil Gaiman has teased fans with some details about his upcoming American Gods television series.
The acclaimed sci-fi writer will work with HBO to bring his novel to television audiences around the world, and he insists that the show will differ from the book.
Gaiman told MTV News: "I'm worrying about it one episode at a time [and] one season at a time. The overall plan right now is that the first season would essentially be... the first book, with a few interesting divergences. You don't want the people who've read the book to be able to go, 'I know everything that's going to be happening.' Well, no. You know a lot more than anybody who is starting from here, but we will do things that will surprise you, too."
HBO have commisioned the show in the wake of the success of Game of Thrones, which proved that there is a huge audience for action fantasy programming.
Explaining that a long-running show will enable him to go further than he was able to with the 2001 novel, he explained: "There was always so much more plot for American Gods and... what happens in the fall-out, so we're just going to follow it along."
American Gods is expected to premiere in 2013.
Great sci-fi movies...
