Gary Glitter has caused public outrage after setting up a personal account on Twitter.

The shamed singer, who announced a comeback tour earlier this week, has sent nearly 200 tweets and gained over 6000 followers.

The Twitter description states: 'The official twitter of Gary Glitter. Managed and updated by me. King of rock & roll. 2012 comeback tour details coming here soon. Watch this space!'

Comedian Frankie Boyle has already launched an attack at Glitter's account, posting: '@OfficialGlitter Hi Gary. Would you say it’s you or the captain of the Concordia that’s f****d more people in international waters?'

Glitter's account replied: '@frankieboyle I want to put everything behind me, time has passed, now I want to move on with my music. People like you don't help me.'

Frankie replied: '@officialglitter Ignore the haters. Rose West is getting a similarly hard time on Mumsnet.'

Footballer Joey Barton also dived in the argument, tweeting: 'Gary Glitter on twitter? Is that true? Surely that's like giving an arsonist a box of matches and a can full of petrol?'

Glitter was convicted of possession of child pornography in the United Kingdom in 1999, after pleading guilty to 54 offences of making indecent photographs of children.

He was also jailed in March 2006 for molesting two girls aged eleven and twelve.
