Jack White: 'I had nothing planned for my record'

Former White Stripes star Jack White has revealed how his current solo project was almost a complete accident, revealing that he had nothing planned for his own record.

Speaking last night at an exclusive playback of his debut solo release, 'Blunderbuss', White told how he began recording the record in his Nashville studio.

"I didn't realise I was doing this until I was doing it," he said in a Q&A session with the Mayor of London borough Lambeth. "A session in my studio got cancelled and I had flown players in from out of town so I gave them one of my own songs to play. By the sixth or seventh song it felt like we were making a record."

"I had six people in a studio and no song," he added. "I had to pretend I had a song. There were six men stood around a piano. I just said 'it's in c boys' and we took it from there."

White also told the audience at the intimate event that he would never have recorded 'Blunderbuss' if it weren't for the talented community of musicians in Nashville.

"If I didn't live in Nashville I wouldn't have made this record," he said. "I collected a huge family of musicians. It was working Wanda Jacksons record last year that changed my production. We had 10-12 people in a room playing live. I walked back into the control room and realised i'd never orchestrated that many people. By the time I did my own record I felt I could work with that number of people."

"There are so many session musicians in Nashville, I'd I hadn't been there I wouldn't have had access to such talent"

'Blunderbuss' is due for release on 23 April, 2012. White recently announced London summer live dates, he will perform at Hammersmith Apollo on 22 June and at Radio One's Hackney Weekend on 23-24 June.
