Justin Vernon of Bon Iver has formed a new hip hop band. Having previously worked with Kanye West on his 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' album, the American now plans to venture further into rap along with Astronautalis. It's understood that the pair recorded an album last weekend.

Using Vernon's Wisconsin studio as a base, City Pages and Stereogum have reported the inclusion of Bon Iver drummer S. Carey, while Ryan Olson has handled the production. The project has a name but is known only to the band at this point.

Astronautalis, who has released four of his own albums to date, spoke of the collaboration as being "exhilarating", and warned that it may confound some expectations. "A lot of my fans are like, 'Oh this is going to be amazing: Astronautalis rapping and Justin singing choruses'. It's not going to be that."

Vernon's most recent collaboration was premiered at the end of last month when he teamed up with The Flaming Lips to create Record Store Day single 'Ashes in the Air'. This month he is set to feature at the Coachella festival (April 13-15 and April 20-22).
