Sex Pistol's frontman John Lydon has distanced himself from a campaign aiming to see his band's 'God Save The Queen' hit reach No.1 to coincide with the Queen's Jubilee later this year.

A Facebook group has been set up to help boost the track's chances of hitting the No.1 spot, after a chart blunder denied the track a No.1 placing on its original release in 1977. However, Lydon has made a statement rejecting the campaign, saying it 'undermines what The Sex Pistols stood for'.

"I would like to very strongly distance myself from the recent stories and campaign to push God Save The Queen for the number 1 spot over the Jubilee weekend," said Lydon. "It is certainly not my personal plan or aim.  I am proud of what The Sex Pistols achieved and always will be but this campaign totally undermines what The Sex Pistols stood for.

"This is not my campaign. I am pleased that the The Sex Pistols recordings are being put out there for a new generation however I wish for no part in the circus that is being built up around it.  I am currently very focused on Public Image Ltd."

Lydon previously angered Sex Pistols fans when he appeared in TV adverts for Dairy Crest butter in 2009.
