Russell Brand spoke to MPs in Parliament about drug use and government policy in the UK today, quoting rapper Tupac Shakur in the process. (April 24).
Brand appeared at the Home Affairs Committee meeting earlier, dressed down in a sleeveless black vest and jeans, in a bid to help the committe get a handle on the issues surrounding drugs and drug addiction in the UK.
Speaking about his own addiction (which he has since beaten) Brand said: "It is more important that we regard people suffering from addiction with compassion and there is a pragmatic rather than a symbolic approach to treating it."
"As a drug addict, the legal status (of a drug) is an irrelevance," he told the MPs. "At best it is an inconvenience."
Adding: "There is a degree of cowardice and wilful ignorance about this condition. There needs to be honesty and authenticity on this issue so Parliament does not look out of touch."
When asked if he saw himself as a role model for young people to look up to by the committe, Brand cited Tupac for his words, saying: "Role is something people play, model is something people make, both of those things are fake."
The Tupac reference came from a 1992 interview the rapper gave to MTV in which he said: "Look at those words, 'role' and 'model.' Both of those are fake words, to play a role and to model, that's fake. I'm real. Being real, I drink, I hang out, I party"
