Vampire Weekend have revealed that they're hard at work on their third album and aim to release in at some point in 2012.

The band, who are signed to MusicWeek award winners XL Recordings, say they have plenty of songs in contention for their next release and alerted fans to the possibility of releasing new music this year.

Chatting to Rolling Stone, lead singer Ezra Koenig said: "It would be cool if it was [released] this year. I always want to release music as soon as possible, but more and more I'm realizing it's something you almost have no control over. We just never want to be in a position [where] when we put out something, we feel could've benefited from more time."

The band have explored numerous side projects since the release of Contra, most recently wth bassist Chris Baio prepping an electronic EP through the Greco-Roman label.
