Iron Maiden's metal classic 'The Number Of The Beast' has been voted the Best British Album of the past 60 years by the British public in a survey by HMV.
Paying tribute to the Queen's Jubilee celebrations, the music retailer polled its customers, with 9.2% of those who took part naming the 1982 album taking top spot in the countdown. Nearly 55,000 music fans took part in the poll, with 2,754 naming the Iron Maiden album as their pick.
“You often tend to see the same artists and albums dominate album polls," said HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo. "But with social media increasingly giving the most ardent and passionate fans a powerful voice, I think that’s all going to change, and so it’s no surprise that Iron Maiden have come out on top as their fans are renowned for being the most loyal and dedicated around.
"Congratulations to Iron Maiden – we now know the number of the beast is, I fact... One!"
Depeche Mode were named as the second favourite, with 'Violator' pulling 6.3% of votes, while The Beatles placed four albums inside the Top Ten including 'Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' at No.3.
