Kate Nash has defended her decision to showcase a new style of music, saying she will 'never' make songs like those on her first two albums again.
Nash, famed for her often twee and gentle indie tracks, revealed the grungey, Riot Grrl influenced song 'Under-Estimate The Girl' last week, dividing fans between those who admire her decision to change and those mocking her.
Writing in a blog post on Tumblr, Nash explained why she felt that sitting still and being complacent would be far worse than any insults about her new music.
"I believe it is important to push boundaries, to try new things, and not to re-create," she wrote. "Art and humans alike are supposed to grow and change. Jeez if I was still the same person I was when I was 16 that would be f**king s**t!"
Adding: "I've been hurt and I'm angry and playing bass and shouting about it makes me feel better. That's all it is. And if that freaks people out then good."
