Manchester pop newcomers Swiss Lips have paid tribute to the world's last Pinta Island tortoise - who passed away today, aged 100.

The band, who caused waves with the viral video for their track 'U Got The Power' in 2011, expressed sadness at the death of George at his home in the Galapagos National Park.

"I first read about George a couple of months ago, he had passed me by before then," said frotnman Sam Hammond in an interview with Gigwise. "It's pretty sad. He's the last of those tortoises - because we ate them all probably.

"He was really old - and now he's gone. It's just sad that he wouldn't mate with any of the others. They weren't the right breed. And now he's gone. It's tragic."

"I don't know how you encourage tortoises to mate," he added, "maybe play them some Luther Vandross?"
