The biggest selling album and single in America in 2012 have been claimed by a Brit and an Aussie (via Belgium) - with Adele and Gotye named the biggest selling album and singles selling artists in the US this year.

Adele's '21' repeats the same continued success it has enjoyed in the UK and is the biggest selling album of 2012 (despite its release in 2011) while Gotye's Kimbra duet 'Somebody That I Used To Know'.

'21' has now sold over 3.69million copies and was the biggest selling album in the US at the same point in 2011 as well. This is the first time in history than the same album has repeated the feat in two consecutive years. Adele's debut album '19' is also at No.10 in the mid-year countdown, having sold 539,000 copies in 2012. The second biggest selling album in the US is Lionel Richie's 'Tuskegee' and One Direction's 'Up All Night' at No.3.

Gotye takes top place for singles ahead of Fun.'s 'We Are Young' and Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Call Me Maybe'. Kelly Clarkson's 'Stronger' and Nicki Minaj's 'Starships' places fourth and fifth.
