George Michael has revealed the extent of his pneumonia bout in 2011, saying he woke to found he had begun speaking with a Westcountry accent - and left him with fears the illness had caused serious brain damage.

The star was seriously ill late last year, and was comatose for three weeks. He has revealed how he woke with a Bristolian accent, and revealed fears of permanent brain damage after the illness.

"My doctors were genuinely worried that I had this condition, it’s a genuine thing where people wake from comas speaking French or some other language they learned at school," he told London radio station LBC.

"Mine was two days of this vaguely Bristolian accent, and they were worried I could have spoken like that for the rest of my life. They were saying, ‘Oh my god, he’s got brain damage.’

"Not that there’s anything wrong with the West Country accent — but it’s a bit weird when you come from North London."

In another interview Chris Evans on Radio Two, he spoke of the memory loss he experience after waking from his coma.

"I went and played for another three weeks in Europe. And then one afternoon I was having lunch and suddenly felt really odd and said to everyone that I had to go and lay down for half an hour on my own," he told the BBC broadcaster. "And that's the last thing I remember for five weeks. It was three weeks of them trying to save my life and two weeks awake."

George Michael is back on top form, having this week revealed his new video, 'White Light', starring supermodel Kate Moss.
