Stars such as Pete Townshend, Robert Plant and Simon Cowell have signed a letter urging Google to take stronger action against file sharing.

The letter, written by The Telegraph, states that Google is enabling music piracy by making file sharing sites visible in their searches.

Other names who have co-signed the letter include Sir Elton John, Professor Green, Tinie Tempah and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The letter, which will be delivered to PM David Cameron this week, reads: "We can realise this potential only if we have a strong domestic copyright framework, so that UK creative industries can earn a fair return on their huge investments creating original content.”

Google's slow uptake on the 2010 Digital Economy Act is also criticised in the letter.
