Performers at Friday night's London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony were paid just £1 for their services.

The stars were all signed up to appear at the event for free, but the £1 payment was to make sure that contracts were binding. The likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Emeli Sande, Dizzee Rascal and Mike Oldfield were among the artists signed up for the nominal fee.

Performers at the ceremony will have seen financial return from their appearances however, with reports of a huge boost in sales for artists involved in the ceremony - thought to have been watched by a billion people worldwide.

Dizzee Rascal's 'Bonkers' has seen an increase sales, as has ceremony warm-up act Frank Turner. Arctic Monkeys were given a boost with renewed interest in their 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' hit and Beatles cover, 'Come Together'.

Many other dancers and other artists were also paid the minimal fee to secure their appearance.
