Frontman of Irish soft rockers The Script and judge on BBC talent show The VoiceDanny O'Donoghue has spoken out in support of X Factor star Cher Lloyd after a hostile audience turned nasty on the singer at V Festival.

The frontman of the Irish band said the experience must have been 'awful' for Lloyd, who was said to have quit the stage in tears after a festival goer threw a bottle of urine at the star during her slot at the Chelmsford event on the weekend. O'Donghue also claims that festival organisers should have been aware of likely problems of booking the X Factor starlet.

"That's an awful thing to to happen to such a young girl, and I hope she doesn't take offence from it," he tells Gigwise. "I would probably have said the organisers could have seen that before it happened.

"I'm surprised it happened at V fest, that's quite a 'pop' festival. I guess the V festival-goers are going to go to watch the left-of-centre acts, but then I guess ones that are so straight forward, ones that have come off the television."

He also adds that the act he mentored on 2011 series of The Voice had a different experience at the festival.

"But then Bo [Bruce] played at the weekend and she got a great reception! So I don't know."

Professor Green previously spoke of his support for the X Factor singer.
