Distraught One Direction fans have launced a Twitter campaign for Zayn Malik's return to the social network after the boyband star quit the site after receiving hostile messages.

As reported on Gigwise, Zayn de-activated his account after deciding he was no longer interested in the 'hate' and useless opinions' he has to deal with every time he posts a message on the site.

However, understandably upset at the loss of 1/5th of their idols from the Twitter world, One Direction fans have started the #ComeBackZayn campaign with the aim of seeing Zayn back Tweeting as soon as possible.

As you can see, things are getting a bit emotional on the frontline:

The 'What Makes You Beautiful' boyband have one of the most dedicated fan bases in music with each member having millions of followers each. However, this level of attention clearly has a downside and Malik has decided he is better off without the hassle.

Revealing his reasons for quitting, Malik Tweeted to say: "The reason i don't tweet as much as i use to, is because I'm sick of all the useless opinions and hate that I get daily goodbye twitter.

Adding: "Fans that have something to say can tweet me on the one direction account."

Zayn is not the first pop star to delete his Twitter account with both Nicki Minaj and Azealia Banks opting out of the social networking site. Both stars did, however, subsequently return to Tweeting shortly afterwards.

Earlier this week it was confirmed that One Direction will join Taylor Swift at this year's Radio 1 Teen Choice Awards in London.
