BBC Radio 2 has confirmed plans to air a show described as combining the music of Britpop with the story telling skills of US TV show Glee later this month.
Shout To The Top has been created by Jeff Smith, the man responsible for the Radio 2 and 6Music playlists and will star former Eastenders actor Shane Richie (pictured). Former Sleeper singer Louise Wener and ex-Farm drummer Roy Boulter have written the pilot.
Smith confirmed that the Shout To The Top pilot will tell the story of an all female band who manage to capitalise on the rise of Britpop in a way many of the female bands of the time failed to achieve.
"My conceit was that bands such as Lush and Elastica never really achieved the promise people thought they would - but then, later on, bands like Coldplay became world famous acts, built, arguably, on Britpop," Smith told The Stage.
"The band in the drama become as big as Coldplay, and [the radio show] is the story behind their success.”
Smith confirmed that Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams and Prefab Sprout’s When Love Breaks Down, will feature in the pilot alongside two original songs.
Shout to the Top will be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 September 25.
