Mumford & Sons have dismissed any notion of a rivalry between themselves and Green Day as both bands go head to head for the Official UK Number One album this week.

Both bands released new albums on Monday (Sept 24) with Mumford's second album 'Babel' facing stuff competition in the sales from Gree Day's latest album 'Uno!'.

However, speaking to NME, Ted Dwayne of the group revealed that he is chuffed to just be in the same breath as a band as well known as Green Day.

"No.2 was the best we got with 'Sigh No More' so it would be amazing," he said.  "Obviously no one's going to wish against a No.1 record but I know Green Day and Muse have albums out and they’re pretty big hitters. If you told me in the 90s that I’d be in a chart battle with Green Day, I probably would have just laughed at you."

'Babel' is on course to top the UK album charts this week with sales of more than 100k, and sales in America are even more impressive. Babel is set to shift between 575-626k in America this week, easily toppling current US No.1 album, The Truth About Love by Pink from the top spot. This is the 'Blow Me (One Last Kiss)' singer's first ever US No.1 album, and scored her biggest first week sales of her career.

The previous record for stateside album sales in 2012 was held by Justin Bieber, who debuted on top earlier this year with his Believe album with sales of 375k.
