Billie Joe Armstrong broke a twelve month stretch of sobriety on the day he went on a expletive-filled rant at a gig last week, it has been claimed by a source close to the band.
Claudia Suarez Wright, who is the ex-wife of Green Day drummer Tre Cool, revealed to Celebuzz that Armstrong was drinking heavily whilst in Vegas for the iHeartRadio music festival where the now infamous outburst took place.
"When he was in Vegas he was drinking a lot," said Wright. Adding: "The night of the show he had been drinking. In Las Vegas there's a lot of temptation to drink and it's tough to be around when you're fighting against it. They have a new album coming out and it's a demanding lifestyle. It's very difficult."
Suarez Wright continued: "He's my son's godfather so it's very hard for kids to see this happen. And it must be very difficult for his wife and family."
Billie Joe Armstrong has entered rehab since the Vegas incident, meanwhile Green Day are involved in a chart battle with Mumford & Sons for this weeks number one album in the UK.
