Gary Barlow has revealed he was depressed and miserable during his first season as a judge on X Factor.

Barlow joined the show in 2011 and has told how trying to balance his role on the talent show with his duties in Take That at the time was almost too much for him to cope with.

"I was on tour while we were doing the auditions last year and it was hard work. I always felt miserable when I arrived because I was knackered," says Barlow in an interview with The Mirror.

Despite playing the role of the grumpy one on the X Factor judging panel, Barlow also reveals that this year's auditions were more enjoyable without the pressure of his own pop star role. "This year, I’ve enjoyed the bad ones more than the good ones," he adds.

X Factor continues on TV screens this weekend as the action progresses to the judges houses stages. It was revealed earlier this week that the show would be bringing back 'wild card' contestants, with acts eliminated at bootcamp returning to the show.
