Matt Bellamy has revealed he took inspiration for Muse's new album The 2nd Law after watching an episode of Newsnight on TV.

The frontman revealed the unlikely influence after previously claiming that the album is the band's first 'personal' record, on which they singer about their own lives and relationships.

"I was sitting watching Newsnight, with Jeremy Paxman going on about the Euro crisis," says Bellamy in an interview with The Huffington Post. "It was late 2011, and one bloke on the panel linked the economic crisis to unsustainability. He said it was just how energy functioned, and it's part of human evolution that there's a conflict in ourselves we can't yet overcome. It was so simple."

He also adds that touring with U2 also influenced the band's latest release, adding: "We realised the power of one guitar playing live, that these sounds can be small but powerful, that you don't need to overlay everything all the time."

"When I was going through the tough time and stopped drinking, I just threw myself into writing in the studio," he told The Sun newspaper. "Over the years as the drinking got worse, I became detached from the band. I never questioned if I wanted to be in the band but once I cleaned myself up I realised how much I loved music.

“It was the only thing which could take my mind off drinking."
