X Factor hopeful Jake Quickenden lost his brother whilst going through the audition process for this year's show, it has been revealed.

Jake, who spoke about his brother's battle with illness and wanting to succeed in the competition for him, was seen by ITV viewers competing to impress mentor Nicole Scherzinger at the Judges Houses stage of the competition last night (Sept 29).

However, Oliver Quickenden passed away shortly after Jake returned to Britain from Dubai, where he had been filming the X Factor. Last night's show was dedicated to the teenager.

Oliver battled bone cancer throughout his life and Jake spoke about his desire to do well in the competition to 'give Oliver something to live for'. However, his health deteriorated whilst Jake was in Dubai and he tragically died earlier this month (Sept 8).

Tweeting about what happened as last night's show aired, Jake wrote: 'Heard the show is very emotional 2nite I still had my little brother with me when I was there so gonna be tough to watch! Hope you all enjoy x.

'I never wanted to go in with a sob story but when s**t is happening, it’s hard not to let it hurt you and get to you.'

The 12 X Factor contestants making it through to the live finals will discover their fate in tonight's ITV show (Sept 30)
