George Michael has announced the cancellation of his upcoming live shows in Australia, revealing he will instead seek counselling for his nearly fatal bout of pneumonia in 2011.

The 'White Light' star was taken seriously ill last year and has now been forced to pull out of scheduled dates down under to seek post-traumatic counselling. The singer announced the cancellation in an official statement on his website.

“Since last year’s illness, I have tried to work my way through the trauma that the doctors who saved my life warned me I would experience," he says as he expresses his regret. “They recommended complete rest and post-traumatic counselling.

"Unfortunately, I seriously underestimated how difficult this year would be."

Michael made his comeback earlier this year at the Olympics closing ceremony, but his performance was widely critcised when he performed a new single instead of sticking to his classic hits.

He later told his criticise to 'F**k off' in a string of tweets.

"Morning everyone! Had a GREAT time at the closing! I hope you are not bothered by the press reports of my scandalous 'promotion' !!!" he Tweeted after hearing the criticism of his performance.

Adding: "Please join me in telling them to f*ck off ! It was my one chance on tv to thank you all for your loyalty and prayers, and I took it. X And I don't regret it. Xxxx"

The singer's spokesperson had earlier issued a statement stating: "George wanted to perform his new single because it reflected everything he has been through in the last year."
