X Factor finalist Jade Ellis suffered years of abuse from bullies who lived on the same council estate, claims the singer's mother.

Ellis previously spoke of being abused in the street for being a lesbian, but now her mum has spoken of the extent of trauma the talent show contestant endured.

Stacey Baxter (Ellis' mum) tells The Mirror newspaper that the two confronted the individual responsible for the bullying after she encouraged her daughter to stand up for herself.

"I said to Jade: 'Look, you are going to have to lash out so they know not to mess with you," says Baxter. "One day she did and no one has ever messed with her since. It was ridiculous but she did find her inner strength."

The newspaper also reveals that Ellis entire family was subject to violent attacks - with Baxter being punched in the face on a bus while four-month-old Jade was thrown under a bus seat. The family grew up in South London.

Her traumatic past now behind her, Jade is currently being mentored by Tulisa on X Factor, and her mum believes the strength she found as a youngster will help her succeed in the competition.

"We gave her roots and now she is using her wings. I'm glad she is showcasing herself," adds Baxter. "It's a big industry and you've got to do some crazy things to get noticed really. Jade never gave up, that's been her dream, to do something for her and her daughter."
