Government collapse would make it 'worthwhile'

Jonny Marr, says he would reform The Smiths if David Cameron's coalition falls apart.

Speaking at yesterday's Q Awards, the guitarist suggested that the collapse of the current government would be a 'definite catalyst' for a reunion.

Upon receiving his Q Hero award at yesterday's ceremony, Marr responded predictably to the inevitable question of whether he would consider a reformation.

He told Q: "It's a bit unimaginative, a bit obvious."

But when the subject of the current coalition government came up, Marr retorted, "Oh it would definitely be worth that! Everybody knows that. God, yeah!"

The Smiths split in 1987, and since then have turned down several lucrative offers to reform.

The Salford four-piece gained a reputation for their staunch opposition to Margaret Thatcher's conservative government in the 1980s- and the parallels between her reign and David Cameron's coalition have caused some Smiths rumours to resurface.

In recent years, Marr has also been a member of Modest Mouse and The Cribs. He played guitar and toured with the Wakefield trio during their 2009 album, 'Ignore the Ignorant'- before leaving the band a year later.

Returning to the subject of his award, he jovily professed: "Hero or haircut, either's covered by me!"

The guitar-hero's jokey comments are unlikely to carry much weight in terms of a realistic Smiths reunion though.

Earlier this year he deflected rumours, simply claiming "I got things to do."

Meanwhile at the beginning of October, a source close to outspoken frontman, Morrissey, told Rolling Stone: "The Smiths are never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever going to reunite - ever."

Marr speaks to Q Magazine at this year's Q Awards.
