Brandon Flowers has spoken out about his strong Mormon beliefs, recalling a debate that he had with Richard Dawkins on Swedish TV.

The Killers frontman suggested that some of his answers had been edited out of the show, as they did not want to show Christianity represented properly, and went on to refer to Dawkins as a 'lemon tree'.

Flowers started by saying, in an interview with The Guardian, "I gave some decent answers that were edited out. So, the world is against the Christian man."

He went on to insist that nothing should deter him from his Christian faith, saying, "Nothing that science will ever find will disprove that God had a hand in it, for me. So it's a useless debate. And nothing that has been found has changed the gospel that I believe in."

Flowers added that he would like Dawkins to "stop dragging my church through the mud," adding that "he's this smart guy and getting his information from the wrong places. That was really what frustrated me.

"He's an unhappy old lemon tree. I'm a peach."

On the show, author and ethologist Richard Dawkins called the Book of Mormon 'an obvious fake'.

Flowers described his faith as 'a beautiful thing' and said that he 'took offence' after The God Delusion writer Dawkins called Mormon founder Joseph Smith 'a charlatan' on the show Skavlan – before the singer told the author to 'do his research.

During the interview, Flowers was asked if Republican candidate and fellow Mormon Mitt Romney had asked The Killers for their support. He replied: "There have been some talks but the whole band isn’t Mormon.

"We aren’t divided necessarily but we all have our different opinions on things and we’re pretty much standing on neutral ground when it comes to this stuff. We’re a secular band – we’re the Switzerland of bands."
