Lady Gaga has hit out at critics of her apparent weight gain, pointing out that UK star Adele is 'bigger' than her - and doesn't draw the same attention for her size.
The 'Born This Way' singer also said that she purposely gained 30lbs before launching her Body Revolution campaign on the Little Monsters website. The campaign is intended to encourage her fans to be more comfortable with their bodies, and less judgemental of others.
Speaking to Stylist magazine, Gaga said that she "didn't really care" about the media attention and the big deal that was made out of her weight gain, and pointed out that the news reporting it should be paying attention to more important things.
She said, "I was acutely aware of some photos on the internet – my mom called me and was like, 'Did you gain weight?' – everybody was telling me about it, and I didn't really care.
"But when I heard it was on the news, where they talk about wars, the economy crashing and the election – I just thought, ‘This is f**king ridiculous.’ I mean, what kind of example is that to a young girl sitting at home?"
Lady Gaga: 'Adele's confidence is something I have to match.'
Gaga then went on to reference Adele, adding, "She added: "I thought, well I don’t really care if they think I’m fat, because, quite honestly, I did gain about 30 pounds. Adele is bigger than me, how come nobody says anything about it?
"She’s so wonderful and I think her confidence is something I have to match. She has set the bar very high for a lot of women."
She finished by emphasising her need for confidence, adding: "I need to be a confident woman and just say politically active things when I can that are helpful to young people."
